Vvii is a designer and emerging self-taught artist based in Miami. Gravitating towards monochromatic and tonal color palettes, her intention is to bring a sense of peace and understated beauty to a space. Drawn to the history of ancient symbolism, traditions, and the wisdom of the Hebrew language, she delicately peppers subtle hints of such imagery in contrast to her abstract contemporary works. She revels in letting these details be revealed when up close, as though sharing with her audience a secret or hidden power.
Growing up in Downton Montreal and having spent over a decade living and working as an interior designer in New York City’s West Village, Vvii has been influenced by downtown culture, fashion, art and design for as long as she can remember. Grateful for her diverse background, she attributes her unique point of view to her Spanish, Moroccan, Israeli, and Eastern European heritage.
She recently discovered that she is a synesthete- a person who has synesthesia, which to quote from Wikipedia: “…is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. For instance, people with synesthesia may experience colors when listening to music, see shapes when smelling certain scents, or perceive tastes when looking at words.” This newfound understanding of why Vvii sometimes mixes her senses has brought her great insight as to how her mind somehow brings so many seemingly disconnected elements and influences together so fluidly, which translate through her art. She jokes that she is inspired by everything and anything, from music and dance, to scents, to tennis, to even how sea turtles find their way back home after hatching on the shore.
Once she’s engrossed in her process and painting becomes like a form of meditation, she unearths unexpected new glimmers that alter the path of her work, resulting in a serendipitously cohesive piece, that often ends up magically aligning with the energy of the natural events occurring around her. In letting go of expected outcomes, she lets herself experiment with techniques, tools, mediums and colors, as she’s learned to trust that she’ll end up in a place of fulfillment and happiness. Her hope is that this great sense of trust in herself will, somehow, by osmosis, transfer to those whose gaze fall upon her art, so that they too, if need be, can begin to gain a greater trust in themselves.
In a time where there are so many, often, conflicting messages and frequencies, she takes joy in offering uplifting and peaceful images to balance things out. If she had only one word to describe her art, as well as her view on this life, she would say that everything beautiful is always motivated by love in the end.
